Obituary for Elaine Althea Carps

Elaine Althea Carps, age 92 of Southfield, passed away Monday, April 9, 2018 at home. She was born September 4, 1925 in Detroit to Roberto and Sophia Accorsi. Elaine graduated from Berkley High School in 1942--the same year she won Miss Berkley. She and her husband, Roy, built their own home by hand and lived in it until her passing.

Elaine led a wonderful and interesting life. In the 1960s, she worked for a time at the Office of Economic Opportunity as a Field Coordinator. She was an ex-President of the Michigan Questers. She also had many hobbies and excelled at them. Elaine won the 1976 Smithsonian Bicentennial American Quilt Show and also won numerous blue ribbons at the Michigan State Fair for her braided and hooked rugs. She was an avid doll collector and very skilled in making dolls and doll outfits--also was a member of the Doll Collectors of America. Elaine was a master craftsperson in caning, hooking rugs, braiding, knitting, tailoring, and an avid antique collector and antique restoration expert. She also loved passing on her knowledge to any willing to listen and learn. Through of all of her accomplishments, she was most proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Surviving her are her children, Virginia Pitts, Richard Carps, Daniel (Sherry) Carps, Rebecca (Randolph) Andeer, Elizabeth (Richard) Stephens, and Martha (William) Mack; siblings, Phyllis (Patricia McCloskey) Accorsi, William (Shirley) Accorsi, Ralph Accorsi, and Margaret Alongi; sister-in-law, Audrey Accorsi; 21 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Roy Carps (1990); her son, William Carps; siblings, Robert Accorsi and Jean Purcell; sister-in-laws, Lee Accorsi, and Bernice Accorsi; and brother-in-laws, Alphonso Alongi, Jess Purcell, and Grover Updyke.

The family will receive friends Thursday 2-9 PM and Friday 2-9 PM at the Sawyer-Fuller Funeral Home, 2125 12 Mile Road, Berkley (two blocks west of Woodward Avenue). Memorial service will be Saturday 3:30 PM at the Pine Hill Congregational Church, 4160 Middlebelt Road, West Bloomfield (1/4 Mile south of Long Lake Road).
Memorial contributions may be made to the NAACP

Near the end, she asked for only three things: to die peacefully in her sleep, to die in her own bed, and that she die in her own home. She accomplished all three on Monday night.
