Obituary for Elizabeth S. Nelson

Elizabeth “Liz” Sigrid Nelson, of Auburn, Indiana, passed away March 26th, 2018 at home with loved ones by her side at the of age 92. She was born to John Carl Nelson and Ella Roberta (Bleakley) Nelson in Berkley, Michigan.

After Elizabeth graduated from Berkley High School, she attended Ohio Wesleyan University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business. She then graduated from Oakland University with master’s degree in education. Her career spanned from General Motors as Executive Assistant in the Styling Department, to J. Walter Thompson Advertising Agency as Executive Assistant to the Detroit Office Manager, to Berkley School District where she found her passion as an elementary school teacher.

Upon retirement she moved to Auburn, IN, to join her sister and her family. Elizabeth enjoyed the small town, family-focused community. She enjoyed Women’s Literary Club, the Historical Society (for which she volunteered for many years) and her close friends. She had many special canine companions, most recently including, Robbie and Molly. Her particular joy was Robbie because he was rescued from a puppy mill and they had a bond like none other.
Elizabeth especially enjoyed genealogy. As the family historian, she often shared fascinating stories about growing up in the post-depression era in a small town outside of Detroit.

The pride and joys of her life were her nieces and nephews including Ann, Jon, Julie, John Paul, Janet, JoAnne and James. Surviving are her brother, John Nelson of Saginaw, Michigan; nieces, Ann Kneifel of Martinsville, Indiana, Julie Heimach of Auburn, Janet Nelson of Fort Worth, Texas, JoAnne Nelson of Troy, Michigan; and a nephew, Jon A. Duncan of Glenview, Illinois. She has many beloved grandnephews and grandnieces that brought her great joy. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Carl; her sister, Sigrid Duncan; two infant siblings, Margaret and Blake; her nephews, John Paul Nelson and James Phillip Nelson; her sister-in-law, Joan Fay Nelson; and brother-in-law, Frank Al Duncan, DDS.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 11 AM until 1 PM at the Sawyer Funeral Home, 2125 12 Mile Road, Berkley (two blocks west of Woodward Avenue). Interment will be at White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery in Troy.
