Obituary for Rebecca Despina Farrand

Rebecca Despina Nicholaides Farrand passed away on Wednesday, June 13th, 2018 at the age of 55. She was born in Detroit, MI on February 4th, 1963. She is the loving daughter of Despina and the late Demetrios Nicholaides. She is survived by her two children Nicholas and Alexandra; her sister, Alexandra Ignasiak; and her niece, Christina, and nephew, Andrew Ignasiak. With a heart filled with pure kindness and love, Rebecca leaves a legacy of light and goodness.

As a child, Rebecca was full of energy. She was a natural athlete, spending many hours riding her bike and playing tennis. She learned quickly and was curious about the world around her. Her hard working, driven nature led her to excel in college. In 1985, Rebecca graduated summa cum laude from the University of Detroit as an English major with a minor in Business Administration. On campus, she was involved in many human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, PAX Christi and Bread for the World. She was a large supporter of the LGBTQA+ community. Rebecca always cared deeply and fought fiercely for those in need.

In the fall of her sophomore year, she met William Farrand in Latin 200 and later grew to know him better in their Philosophy class of her Spring semester. Two years later, they married, and she gave birth to Nicholas Eric Farrand in 1990 and Alexandra Elizabeth Farrand in 1994. Rebecca was incredibly passionate about motherhood. She went above and beyond to ensure that her children, Nick and Alie, were given the opportunity to have an abundance of rich experiences. She effortlessly balanced caring for her family with a full-time job as a Market Research Consultant where she led focus groups and wrote proposals.
“Mama Farrand” prioritized and enjoyed spending time for her children, driving them to their piano, dance, gymnastics and swimming lessons. After a full day of work, Nick and Alie’s beloved mother would pick them up from school with a beaming grin, excited to play tennis with them or dance in the living room before she made them dinner. Rebecca was adventurous and spontaneous, always encouraging her children to live fearlessly and dream endlessly. She was and always will be their greatest advocate.

Rebecca loved nature; she found peace by the water, kayaking, and hiking in the woods. She found joy in the simple pleasure of reading the New York Times with her coffee on the beach. Her vivacious and lighthearted spirit brought energy into every space. She was an incredibly spiritual, intelligent and intuitive individual who has left an indelible mark on many hearts. She will be greatly missed. In the words of one of her favorite artists, “how sweet it is to be loved by you” (Rebecca).
