Obituary for Carol Elaine Randolph

Carol Elaine Randolph of Southfield, age 83, formerly of Detroit was born to Edna Highgate and Clifford Jones. Both of her parents had family ties to Dresden and Chatham, Ontario-Canada. Her parents were hard working and believed in giving back to the community. Her father worked at Ford Motor Company and her mother Edna volunteered at churches playing the piano and the organ. Elaine was raised in the Union Baptist Church of Dresden, her family church, which was re-built by her Uncle Stan Highgate.

She was the loving mother of Victor (Brenda) Randolph, Dr. J. Sharen (Dr. Bryan) Nevins and Karen (Robert Marable) Miller. Dear sister of Norman L. Jones. Proud grandmother of Anthony, Christopher, Elaine, Collin and the late Matthew and caring great grandmother of James, Owen and Sean. She is also survived by her former husband, Eugene R. Randolph.

Elaine was a graduate of Commerce High School and she also graduated from the University of Detroit – Mercy with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. She worked at the Detroit Board of Education for 23 years and retired in 2004 from the Contracting and Procurement Department where she worked as a Purchasing Agent. Her diligence and hard work contributed greatly to the District.

She was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and also a member of the Red Hatters organization. She volunteered as an Advisor for the Co-Ette Club for girls for over 15 years and was passionate about sharing the importance of volunteering with the young ladies in the club. She arranged volunteer assignments for many of the girls over the years. She also encouraged her own daughters to become members of the club as teenagers and advisors as adults.

Before she became ill with multiple myeloma, she had many more opportunities to participate in club activities, visit with friends, enjoy the stock club, play cards (pinochle and bridge) and occasionally win a hand or two. Elaine loved swimming, playing tennis, power walking and square dancing. She could square dance for hours. She encouraged her children and grand-children to participate in sports and the arts. She introduced her son Victor to Greenfield Village at age 5 which spawned a life-long appreciation for history that he continues to share with his grand-children.

As time moved on, her favorite past-time was enjoying her grand-children, vacationing, basking in the good weather and talking with family and friends. Even during her harder days she would take walks and talk with the neighbors to maintain her health and sweet spirit.

Elaine passed away March 13, 2019. She will be loved and missed by her family and many friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 11 AM until the time of the service 12 Noon at the Sawyer-Fuller Funeral Home, 2125 12 Mile Road, Berkley (two blocks west of Woodward Avenue).

Private entombment at Roseland Park Cemetery.
