Obituary for David Cecil Donaldson,Sr.

David Cecil Donaldson passed away into the evening surrounded by love and family at his home on January 1, 2019 in Madison Heights, MI. He was 85.
David was born on January 30, 1933 in Stuart, Florida to his parents, Cecil and Hazel Donaldson (Sisson). He received his G.E.D. and joined the United States Air Force at the age of 17, where he became an Aircraft Engine Mechanic. After leaving the service he pursued various jobs in the building trades until he attended the Max S. Hayes Trade School for Furniture Refinishing, where he won first place in the Kansas City Painters & Decorating Contractors of America convention in 1960. He later went on to become a Painter, Furniture Refinisher, and Glazer for General Motors in Warren, Michigan.
David was a dedicated husband, father, and Grampa with a fierce work ethic, a thirst for knowledge, and a love for the outdoors. Whether it was fishing, hunting, reading encyclopedias, or traveling, Dave was no stranger to adventure. A fishing pole and quiet place to sit is all he needed to be happy, but family is what made him whole. At a moment’s notice he’d pile everyone into the car and abscond to a beach across state, or drag the family one by one out into the snow. He would decide to go up north at ten o’clock at night, taking nothing but what he was wearing and the keys to the Cottage. One minute he’s watching the news and the next he’s wrestling with kids on the living room floor. A child at heart, these and many other blessings truly brought him joy and happiness.
Left to mourn his passing is his wife of 30 years, Blanche (nee Cichoski), his children, Brenda Gruwell (Bill), Cindy Kidwell (Carl), Karrie Selner (David), Anita Wells, Jeffery Donaldson (Heather), Edward Donaldson, 26 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, and finally, 1 great-great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his children David Gates, David Donaldson Jr., Frank Donaldson, Michelle, and Tiffany.

Father’s Song
A father’s song is sought and sound,
of guidance promise and thoughts profound,
laughter prayers and good advice,
heartfelt days and endless nights,
stories told through a river’s bend,
rainy days with no clear end,
hearts of gold beat with nerves of steel,
with arms like boughs I’m gathered and feel,
eyes that shine on stormy nights,
that steer from rocks to house of light,
through fog as thick as smoke and mirror,
time has tested to draw us nearer.

David will be cremated in a private ceremony on January 4, 2019.
